The Ambrosiana Foundation's Mission
Mission Statement
The Ambrosiana Foundation strives to continue the mission of Cardinal Federico Borromeo, the founder of the Ambrosiana Library. Believing that the understanding of other cultures and religions was the basis of a stable society, Borromeo sought out the most outstanding products of human intellectual endeavor, both historical and contemporary, and he assembled them under one roof. He then opened the doors of his Ambrosiana Library to all who wished to learn.
The Foundation wants to open these doors wider so that these treasures and this knowledge can be shared with an ever-expanding world. The Foundation's goal in the United States is to make the Ambrosiana's collections more accessible to the American public by financing study programs, sponsoring scholarly symposia, and organizing exhibitions intended to showcase the wealth and breadth of historic materials found within the Ambrosiana.
The Foundation was established to:
•Provide financial support to enhance Ambrosiana's facilities, services, and the care of its cultural treasures.
•Promote the American public's awareness of the Ambrosiana and its collections.
•Provide services to the Ambrosiana that will enhance the English-speaking visitors' experience.
•Support American scholarship centering on aspects of culture, literature and history involving the Ambrosiana and its collections.
•Utilize the diverse collections of the Ambrosiana as a catalyst for educational programs in the United States.
